ASIA/INDIA -
Palai (Agenzia Fides) - Murder as a result of a robbery: this is the track that investigators are following after the death of Carmelite Sister Amala Valummel, 69 years old, who was found dead in a convent in Palai, in Kerala, a state in South India. The local Church has expressed sorrow and shock at the tragic incident, hoping that the police can identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The sister was found dead in her room by the sisters who did not see her during the morning Mass on September, 17. The sisters belong to the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel.
According to the police, the nun had several head injuries. Police suspect she was killed during an attempted robbery. The sisters reported that about 500 rupees are missing in a room next to Sister Amala’s. The police are interrogating the staff in the convent and some workers who were working on the restoration of the building. The nun was from Ramapuram near Palai. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 18/09/2015)
