"Let the people come in procession to receive the gifts that I want to pour upon this place"

On August 10, 1519, a woodcutter named John de la Baume climbed Mount Verdaille near the village of Cotignac (in southern France), alone. As usual, he began his day by saying a prayer on his knees. No sooner had he got back on his feet than a cloud appeared in front of him, revealing the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms, with two saints (Saint Catherine and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux) and Saint Michael the Archangel at her side.

Standing on a crescent moon, Our Lady addressed John: "I am the Virgin Mary. Go and tell the clergy and the Consuls of Cotignac to build a Church for me here, under the title of Our Lady of Graces, and let the people come in procession to receive the gifts that I want to pour upon this place."

At first John kept the message to himself, which earned him a second apparition. The next day, August 11th, having returned to the same place to finish his wood cutting, he had the same vision, with the same request. This time, he decided to deliver the message immediately. John spoke so earnestly that the city fathers believed him at once. They built a chapel at the site of the apparitions.

This shrine has witnessed the gift of many graces and striking miracles, including the birth of King Louis XIV.
