Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! In a special way, today I am calling you to prayer. Pray, little children, so that you may comprehend who you are and where you need to go. Be carriers of the good news and be people of hope. Be love for all those who are without love. Little children, you will be everything and will achieve everything only if you pray and are open to God's will - to God who desires to lead you towards eternal life. I am with you and intercede for you from day to day before my Son Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call."(November 25, 2014)

Our Lady encourages us to pray in every message. But she says in this message that "In a special way I am calling you to prayer." Our Lady seems to be urgent about this call to prayer. Perhaps we should approach our prayer with great expectation in these days. Perhaps there is a special grace being offered to us right now, a grace to enter into prayer with all our hearts.

I have been going through a dry time in my prayer life. The saints tell us that these dry times are a gift from God, that they help us to be purged and made ready for a deeper relationship with God. So for me this special call to prayer is good news. Maybe God is going to move us all forward in our prayer life now.

Whatever God has planned, we can be sure that it is designed for our good and for the good of the world. Maybe this weekend as we move into the new year in the Church calendar, we can take some extra time for prayer. As we begin Advent, the time of waiting, we can open our hearts to the One we wait for, and seek His face with our whole hearts.

Mother Mary, help us to answer your call to prayer, that special call that you have given to us in your message. May we enter prayer with Your deep faith and expectation. Our Lord is with us and wants to bless us. We want to receive His blessing in prayer. Thank you, dear Mother, for being with us today.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Thanksgiving Day in the USA

Dear Family of Mary!

No one can explain the spiritual virtue of thanksgiving better than Our Lady. It seems that Mary's way of thinking is really the way of gratitude. Just read her Magnificat (Luke 1: 46-55). It is a glorious hymn of gratitude to God for all He has done for her.

Here are three messages Our Lady has given us in which she teaches us how to give thanks. Her precious words can mold us and change our hearts, transforming us into souls that give thanks continually.

"Dear children! I wish to tell you to thank God for all the graces which God has given you. For all the fruits thank the Lord and glorify him! Dear children, learn to give thanks in little things and then you will be able to give thanks also for the big things. Thank you for having responded to my call." October 3, 1985

"Dear children! Today I invite you all to rejoice in the life which God gives you. Little children, rejoice in God, the Creator, because He has created you so wonderfully. Pray that your life be joyful thanksgiving which flows out of your heart like a river of joy. Little children, give thanks unceasingly for all that you possess, for each little gift which God has given you, so that a joyful blessing always comes down from God upon your life. Thank you for having responded to my call." August 25, 1988

"Dear children! I am calling you to a complete surrender to God. Let everything that you possess be in the hands of God. Only in that way shall you have joy in your heart. Little children, rejoice in everything that you have. Give thanks to God because everything is God's gift to you. That way in your life you shall be able to give thanks for everything and discover God in everything even in the smallest flower. Thank you for having responded to my call." April 25, 1989

Have a blessed day!! We are having a big feast in our home. So I have to get busy and cook! But I do want to say that I am very thankful for all of you who receive these little reflections on Our Lady's messages. You have been my encouragement and strength over the years to keep going. Thanks for all your kind emails. I truly am thankful for your presence and your support! And thank you dearest Mother, for being with us for so long in such a profound way. We love you!!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Thanksgiving trivia

Dear Friends

Most Americans know that the Pilgrims celebrated a Thanksgiving feast in 1621.

You may also know that individual states celebrated days of thanksgiving on different days on the calendar -- until President Lincoln called for a national day of Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November in 1863.

But I learned something new while working on the American Catholic Almanac...
Did you know that a Spaniard by the name of Pedro Menendez de Aviles celebrated a feast of Thanksgiving centered on a Mass with the Timucua Indians on September 8, 1565, in St. Augustine, Florida?

They dined on bean soup 56 years before the celebration in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts!

But then...

Another Catholic feast of Thanksgiving happened in Texas -- again before the Pilgrims. Don Juan de Oñate declared April 30, 1598, to be a “Day of Thanksgiving” and it was also commemorated with the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

We give thanks for all the early Americans and for our ancestors in the Faith.

...and for whoever decided on turkey and gravy over bean soup!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at CV.

Son of a shoemaker, and one of five children, three of whom entered religious life. John had great devotion to his position as an altar boy. He spent much of his time caring for his mother, who was in poor health. Jesuit noviate in 1616, deciding to become a Jesuit after reading the life of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. Student at the Jesuit College at Malines, Belgium. Studied philosophy in Rome. John had a dream of helping and teaching multi-lingual migrants, and he studied all the chief languages of Europe. He wanted to work in China after ordination. He died of unknown causes following his participation in a public debate defending the faith, and while clutching his rosary, crucifix, and rules of his order; he did not live to be ordained.
John Berchmans was not noted for extraordinary feats of holiness or austerity, nor did he found orders or churches or work flashy miracles. He made kindness, courtesy, and constant fidelity an important part of his holiness. The path to holiness can lie in the ordinary rather than the extraordinary.

St. Catherine of Alexandria

Dear Family of Mary!

Today we receive a new message from Our Lady. To prepare for this new gift, let's thank Our Lady for the gift she gave us last month on the 25th! As we thank her for these words from her heart, we will receive even more grace from them.

October 25, 2014
"Dear children! Pray in this time of grace and seek the intercession of all the saints who are already in the light. From day to day may they be an example and encouragement to you on the way of your conversion. Little children, be aware that your life is short and passing. Therefore, yearn for eternity and keep preparing your hearts in prayer. I am with you and intercede before my Son for each of you, especially for those who have consecrated themselves to me and to my Son.   Thank you for having responded to my call."

Thank you, dear Mother, for this time of grace. Thank you for teaching us to seek the intercession of the saints. Thank you for showing us that the saints are our examples in holiness and courage, and that they also had to convert just like we do. Mother, don't let us forget how short our lives are. We can get stuck in this earthly life and feel like it will never end. This can make us sad. But you are showing us the way out of that sadness. You are making eternity real to us. Your presence with us changes everything. Thank you for being with us, and interceding for us to Jesus. How lonely and hopeless our lives would be without your presence and help. We do consecrate ourselves to you anew. Never leave our sides. We want to respond to your call with all our hearts. Thank you, for having responded to our call for help! We love you dearest Mother.

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Pope Francis prayed silently for half an hour before an ancient and important icon of the Virgin Mary.

November 24, 2014, Monday — The Pope and Mary: 30 Minutes of Silent Prayer

A few moments ago, on the afternoon of Monday, November 24, in Rome, Pope Francis prayed silently for half an hour before an ancient and important icon of the Virgin Mary.

The Pope was praying before the icon this evening because tomorrow he will travel to Strasbourg, France, to speak to the leaders of the European Union.

So, this afternoon in Rome, as has become his custom before making any trip, Francis visited the Basilica of St. Mary Major to pray to the Virgin Mary.

It was the 14th time Pope Francis has visited St. Mary Major to pray before the icon, known as the Salus Populi Romani (The Safety, or Protection, of the Roman People), since his election to the papacy on March 13, 2013.

The Pope visited the Basilica at 5:30 p.m.

He went immediately to the chapel on the left side of the main altar.

He prayed to Our Lady for her protection for his journey tomorrow to the governing bodies of a new, united Europe which has in recent years become increasingly "post-Christian" and increasingly hostile to traditional Christian morality.

The Pope's remarks tomorrow are being awaited with considerable interest. It is expected that, among other things, he will call on the people's of Europe to remember the Christian faith that shaped their customs and laws for centuries.

The Pope's prayer continued for half an hour. The Pope brought to Our Lady a floral wreath with roses the colors of Europe, yellow and blue.

14th Anniversary of the Death of Fr. Slavko Barbaric

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today when Heaven is near to you in a special way, I call you to prayer so that through prayer you place God in the first place. Little children, today I am near you and I bless each of you with my motherly blessing so that you have the strength and love for all the people you meet in your earthly life and that you can give God's love. I rejoice with you and I desire to tell you that your brother Slavko has been born into Heaven and intercedes for you. Thank you for having responded to my call." November 25, 2000

This message was given the day after Fr. Slavko Barbaric passed away on top of Krizevac. Everyone was stunned. Fr. Slavko was not yet 60 years old when he died. We all depended upon him for spiritual instruction and wisdom. It seemed that he was indispensable to Medjugorje. And in a moment he was gone.

It is not surprising then that in this message Our Lady made a point of telling us, "Little children, today I am near you and I bless each of you with my motherly blessing so that you have the strength and love for all the people you meet in your earthly life and that you can give God's love." She did not want us to feel abandoned or alone without Fr. Slavko. Our Lady wanted us to know that she was still near us! She was still blessing us! She would give us strength and love here in our earthly life. These are words of a Mother to her children who might be frightened or stunned.

And then she told us something amazing, "I rejoice with you and I desire to tell you that your brother Slavko has been born into Heaven and intercedes for you."What a comfort and delight for us all to be told that Fr. Slavko was in heaven and praying for each of us! Our Mother did not want us to be left alone at this moment. Slavko could now be even closer to us, through prayer, than he ever was while alive on earth.

As I was looking through the many books Fr. Slavko wrote, I found a prayer that he included in the book "Mother Lead Us To Peace!!" which is a compilation of Fr. Slavko's reflections on the messages from 1990 to 1994, prepared by Nicky Eltz. We can believe that Fr. Slavko is praying this prayer with us and for us from heaven:

O, Father Almighty, in that we thank You that You have sent us Mary to lead us to Paradise and who wants to bring us closer to You, we ask of You to give all of us, our families and the entire Church a new spirit of prayer. We ask that we may experience You in prayer and in fasting as our salvation. Free us of all that hinders our way to You. Release us of all that suffocates our yearning for You and from our path to Paradise. Bless all those who now live in conflict, in distrust, in wars and in difficulties. Free all the youth who have suffocated themselves in drugs, alcohol and immoral lifestyles that have caused them to be unable to respond to this call. Bless all those whose ears are listening to entirely different voices and who therefore do not listen to Your voice. Heal them and open them so that their hearts may open themselves to You and so that You can fill them with your light and with your salvation. O Father, bless also all the sick and all those who in their suffering have lost all love and hope. Father, bless all prayer groups and all others who seek You. Bless them all through the intercession of Mary, Queen of Peace, Your humble servant and Mother of Your son, Jesus, who lives and reigns with You throughout all eternity. Amen.

Fr. Slavko, pray for us!!

From Mark Mallett: Hell is for Real

Hell is for Real

THERE is one terrible truth in Christianity that in our times, even more than in previous centuries, arouses implacable horror in the heart of man. That truth is of the eternal pains of hell. At the mere allusion to this dogma, minds become troubled, hearts tighten up and tremble, passions become rigid and inflamed against the doctrine and the unwelcome voices that proclaim it.”

A Meditation on the Feast of the Presentation of Mary by Rev. Matthew R. Mauriello

Tribulation Times
November 21, 2014

(Rev 11:19) And the temple of God was opened in heaven: and the ark of his testament was seen in his temple. And there were lightnings and voices and an earthquake and great hail. (Rev 12:1) And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

UDAYTONA Meditation on the Feast of the Presentation of Mary by Rev. Matthew R. Mauriello

ALETEIAWhen the Virgin Mary Appeared in France

VIA A MOMENT WITH MARYCatholics are not Inventing Anything New in Venerating Mary

The oldest prayer addressed directly to the Virgin Mary, Sub tuum praesidium, was found near Alexandria on an Egyptian Coptic papyrus, which, according to many scholars, dates back to the 3rd century AD. This prayer is older than the Ave Maria by several centuries.

This prayer, written in Greek, is a request for intercession, an urgent appeal to the Virgin Mary, from an early Christian community that lived in a time of great danger:

"We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen."

History attests that Catholics, in venerating Mary and seeking to imitate her, are not inventing anything new, but are simply continuing to do what Christians have always done.

VIA A MOMENT WITH MARYA Woman of Superhuman Majesty

One night when Saint Gregory the Wonderworker was pondering the doctrine of the faith, an old man appeared before him. Startled, Gregory stood up and asked: "Who are you and what do you want?" The stranger told him that he had been sent by God to enlighten his doubts and reveal the truth of faith to him.

Gregory hesitated, torn between joy and fear, until the apparition outstretched his hand as if pointing in the opposite direction. Gregory turned and saw a woman of superhuman majesty. Unable to stand the light that emanated from her, he lowered his eyes. Then he heard the two visitors discuss the question that had been preoccupying him.

From this conversation, Gregory gained a true knowledge of the faith, but was also able to identify his two heavenly visitors: he heard the woman pressing John the Evangelist to disclose to him the mystery of faith, and John answered that he was ready to do so, since this was the pleasure of the Mother of God.

When the Virgin Mary and Saint John had left, Gregory rushed off to write down the teaching from Heaven. This testimony is the oldest that has been documented and dates back to the third century.

The Desert Fathers: sayings of the Early Christian Monks: Discretion

111. Another hermit said, 'A man ought always to be working at something in his cell. If he is busy with the psalms, the devil comes to him day after day but finds no resting-place there; even if he succeeds in conquering him and taking him prisoner, God's spirit often comes to him again. But if we are sinners and do not let God's spirit come to us, he will leave us alone.'

Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dear Family of Mary!

October 25, 1996 "Dear children! Today I invite you to open yourselves to God the Creator, so that He changes you. Little children, you are dear to me. I love you all and I call you to be closer to me and that your love towards my Immaculate Heart be more fervent. I wish to renew you and lead you with my Heart to the Heart of Jesus, which still today suffers for you and calls you to conversion and renewal. Through you, I wish to renew the world. Comprehend, little children, that you are today the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Little children, I invite you and I love you and in a special way implore: Convert!" Thank you for having responded to my call."

This is another remarkable message given to us long ago. Our Lady shows a bit of her plan in this message. It is a simple plan, one that depends on the free response of each individual she calls.

First she invites us to open to God the Creator. She calls us to an act of faith. God exists, and therefore we want to know Him. We want to enter into dialogue with Him. We want to trust Him enough to let Him into our life.

She tells us if we do this, God will change us. Meeting God, speaking with God will always change us. He is our Creator. His love is powerful. To encounter Him is to risk losing the status quo of our existence. It means that we may have to set our own self aside, and let Him be #1. That is a huge change. A titanic change for each one of us. It is a coup at the center of our being. If we let God in, He will take up His place as the King in our hearts. It is really risky! Can we do it?

Well Our Lady sweetens the deal by telling us that we are dear to her, she loves us and she wants us to be close to her. Who wouldn't want that? She is Mother! She is love. But she adds that if we draw close to her she will lead us to Jesus, our suffering Savior, who will - guess what - CHANGE US! Yes He will call us to conversion and renewal. So far the plan is going only one way, to the overthrow of our hearts and a new regime in our lives. God will be #1, and Jesus will lead us to change everything in our lives, so that we are oriented toward God as our #1!

Challenging as this may seem, there is a side effect to our opening to God. Our Lady tells us that if we do make this big change, we will renew the world! "Through you, I wish to renew the world. Comprehend, little children, that you are today the salt of the earth and the light of the world." Converted and changed, we will become the catalysts of change in the world. Our witness will draw others, and soon God will be #1 in every heart and every family, city, country and continent. The Triumph of the Immaculate Heart.

So she implores us to CONVERT!

On this beautiful feast of the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, when she gave herself entirely to God, Our Lady leads us by example. She gave all to God, making Him #1 in her life completely. And through her gift of self to the Lord, the Father was able to give Jesus to her and through her to all of us. This is our model, our example. She can lead us to do the same. She has been there and done that!! May we follow her with total trust and joy! This is an invitation we want to accept!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
