Our Lady of Lourdes

Dear Family of Mary!

Today the Church celebrates the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 at Lourdes. The Grotto where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette quickly became a pilgrimage spot where millions of people have since journeyed to ask for healing and graces from Our Lady. Many people have been healed at Lourdes. And today we celebrate the great graces that have been poured out through that little cave by the river Gave.

In Medjugorje, pilgrims also come for the sake of healing. And a great number have been healed. In the early days the visionaries asked Our Lady about the sick often. Here is one of her replies:

Thursday, November 26, 1981

This evening, the Blessed Virgin was smiling. We prayed and sang with her. We asked her questions about the sick.
"Have a strong faith, pray and fast and they will be cured. Be confident and rest in joy. Go in the peace of God. Be patient and pray for the cure. Goodbye, my dear angels."

Our Lady directs the visionaries to tell the people to pray and fast for the sick, to have strong faith and be confident, to be patient and to pray. Like Jesus, she knows that it is the faith of those who ask that will obtain the healing. Our Lady comes to Medjugorje to increase our faith, so that we will be open to receiving the healings and graces we need. She did the same at Lourdes.

Here is a lovely litany in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes that we can pray today with all our hearts for our beloved sick. May all our suffering loved ones be healed through our faith-filled prayer for them:
