Spiritual Gems-Preparing for Communion-January 18, 2014

Preparing for Communion (Part 1)

The Great Holiness

Holy Communion should have gigantic effects within us.  We need only to be baptized, to be in the state of grace and to believe that this is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.  As Paul writes, “Is not the cup of blessing which we bless, a sharing in the blood of Christ?  And is not the bread a sharing in the body of Christ?”  This is the Real Presence, the Catholic Holy of Holies, a fountain of every grace if we just prepare adequately.

Gratitude to the Blessed Virgin

                C. S. Lewis wrote, “God loves matter.  He invented it.”  God especially loves the human body and he sought one from Mary so he could be present to us.  John writes about Jesus’ body, “What we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and our hands have touched – we speak of the Word of Life.”

At that special moment, called by St. Paul, “the fullness of time”, God invited the Virgin Mary to give him his body and blood.  The Church always joins this mystery of Christmas with the mystery of the Eucharist. The host lying on the altar is like the Christ child lying in the crib.

The Glorified Body

This body and blood of Jesus underwent many changes.  It grew and matured.  More important, the blood was shed and the body died.  Then, in the greatest mystery, Jesus rose from the dead and his mortal body was clothed with immortality.  Forty days later, his glorified body ascended into heaven, united forever with the Holy Trinity.  In Communion, we receive this glorified body.  It is our door into life with the Trinity.  This is the Body and Blood which we receive, the glorified body that sits at the right hand of the Father.
