Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Also today, the Most High is giving me the grace to be with you and to lead you towards conversion. Every day I am sowing and am calling you to conversion, that you may be prayer, peace, love - the grain that by dying will give birth a hundredfold. I do not desire for you, dear children, to have to repent for everything that you could have done but did not want to. Therefore, little children, again, with enthusiasm say: 'I want to be a sign to others.' Thank you for having responded to my call." (August 25, 2013)

Today we arrive at the difficult sentence in Our Lady's message, the one everyone is discussing!

"I do not desire for you, dear children, to have to repent for everything that you could have done but did not want to."

It reminds me of a memorable moment in J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", when Mr. Bilbo Baggins is giving a speech to most of his relatives and he says something rather puzzling:

"I shall not keep you long, he cried." Cheers from all the assembly. "I have called you all together for a Purpose." Something in the way that he said this made an impression. There was almost silence, and one or two of the Tooks pricked up their ears.

"Indeed, for Three Purposes! First of all, to tell you that I am immensely fond of you all, and that eleventy-one years is too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits." Tremendous outburst of approval.

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." This was unexpected and rather difficult. There was some scattered clapping, but most of them were trying to work it out and see if it came to a compliment. (J.R.R. Tolkien. "The Fellowship of the Ring. Chapter 1, A Long Expected Party.)

I can't help but chuckle at this "difficult" sentence in Tolkien's great book. And actually it does work out to a compliment of sorts. But I feel like this sentence in Our Lady's message is similarly contorted and difficult.

For me it says that Our Lady does not want me to look back on my life and see that I had the possibility and ability to do many good things and I chose not to do them. She doesn't want me to look back and regret the sins of omissions I have made. When we face the Lord at the end of our lives, we will have to give an account of our choices. It is then that we will have the last chance to repent of our poor decisions. But it will be very late, and we will see all the good we could have done and rue it.

And for me, the key to understanding this sentence is in the very next sentence: "Therefore, little children, again, with enthusiasm say: 'I want to be a sign to others.'" Therefore...The antidote to regretting our past, repenting of our past, being sorry for our past, is to choose with enthusiasm to be a sign! To be one who lives Our Lady's messages, who chooses every day to fast, to pray, to read Scripture, to attend Holy Mass, to love one's neighbor, to go to confession and to love God with one's whole heart, mind, soul and strength! This is how to live every moment to the utmost so that we will not regret anything. All will be well for us! And we will have the joy of having pointed the way to happiness and holiness to others as well.

Our Lady wants us to live life to the full. She wants us to love with all our hearts! To do this, we need to pray for her heart to be in us. With her heart, our desires will be her desires, and we will do all those things that we "could have done". Her heart will align us with the Gospel, with the life of self-sacrificing love, and we will end our lives very happy!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
