Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
I love the Book of Jonah, in fact it is my favorite book of the Bible. Why? It is a story, it is short, it is humorous and it has a very good message of Good News. Poor Jonah, the reluctant prophet who runs away from the Lord, ends up in the belly of a whale. After being rescued, Jonah has only one line of prophecy. “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” Indeed, he might be called a false prophet because as we read, “God changes His mind about the calamity that He said He would bring upon them; and He did not do it.” (Jonah 3:10) Nineveh was NOT destroyed! This shows the power of prayer and fasting – so strong that God changes His mind! In this New Year may we show a willingness to have open hearts and minds – and when necessary change our minds so that they are more clearly in the direction of God and God’s will. | | O God, save me from myself, this frivolous self which plays with Your creation, this vain self which is clever about Your creation, this masterful self which manipulates Your creation, this greedy self which exploits Your creation.
