Diocese of Scranton formally closes Sacred Heart Shrine

Another sad story of closed churches and shrines.

The shrine was constructed in 1974 and was the largest outdoor shrine in the United States devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C. granted the shrine its national status in 1997.

In September 1978, the shrine hosted the National Congress of the Sacred Heart, which was attended by thousands of people from around the world.
