What would prompt a would-be Jesuit priest, who been rejected by the Order, to sail from France to Canada in the 1600s to volunteer at two Jesuit missions, one of which was under attack by the Iroquois Indians, the fiercest of the six Indian nations then populating North America? Why would a man who had been captured, tortured and held as a slave by the Iroquois teach the Sign of the Cross to a native boy when the penalty was certain death?

These are two of the many questions that prompted Fr. William Breault, who lives with the Sacramento Community dedicated to the French martyrs of North America, to research the story of René Goupil, the first of these martyrs.
That book was one part of the inspiration behind Producer Jim Kelty's quest to film a documentary on this companion of St. Isaac Jogues.
