New Permanent Deacon's Ordained on Long Island

The Most Reverend William Murphy, bishop, Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, ordained 11 men to the Diaconate May 14 at Saint Agnes Cathedral, including Basil Anthony Bliss of Saint Anne's Church in Garden City.

Bliss earned an M.S. from Molloy College and an M.A. in pastoral studies from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception. He is chairman of the theology department of Bishop Loughlin Memorial H.S. in Brooklyn. Bliss and his wife, Kathy, have two sons.

A permanent deacon receives the sacrament of Holy Orders and is a member of the clergy and an ordained minister of the Catholic Church. There are three groups, or “orders,” of ordained ministers in the Church:  bishops, presbyters and deacons. Deacons are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came “to serve and not to be served.”  The entire Church is called by Christ to serve, and the deacon, in virtue of his sacramental ordination and through his various ministries is to be a servant in a servant-Church.

Deacons are ordinary ministers of Holy Communion, may preach at Mass and preside at weddings and baptisms. They can also officiate at wake and burial services as well as other forms of liturgical prayer, but they cannot celebrate Mass or administer the sacraments of penance, confirmation or anointing of the sick.
